International Humanitarian Law Training for SES Legal Professionals
The Ukrainian Red Cross organised a training on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) for heads of legal departments and units from the Main Directorates of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) across the country. The training aimed to strengthen participants’ understanding of IHL — the branch of international law applied during armed conflicts — with a focus on the practical application of its core principles in modern warfare.
Participants explored the history, scope, and legal sources of IHL, as well as the rules protecting civilians during armed conflict and mechanisms for ensuring accountability. Theoretical lessons were reinforced through analysis of real-life cases, providing practical insights for practising lawyers.
A dedicated session highlighted the work of the Ukrainian Red Cross, the components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and the protective and distinctive functions of the Red Cross emblem, emphasising the importance of respecting it and preventing misuse.
The Ukrainian Red Cross continues to strengthen cooperation with the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, consolidating joint efforts to enhance the protection of civilians.
