The Ukrainian Red Cross, in partnership with the Office of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, organised a side event focused on preventing conflict-related sexual violence (CRSV)

The event took place as part of the International Conference marking the conclusion of Ukraine’s chairmanship of the Global Alliance on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict (PSVI).

The side event brought together representatives from governments, international and humanitarian organisations, human rights NGOs, academia, and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. It aimed to highlight the challenges Ukraine faces and the innovative approaches it is taking to prevent, document, and respond to CRSV, including through the Ministry of Defence’s Voluntary Report on International Humanitarian Law (IHL).

During the event, a guidebook titled “Analytical Review: International Legal Standards and National Mechanisms for Combating Gender-Based Violence in Armed Conflict” was presented. This unique study was initiated and conducted by the Ukrainian Red Cross to mark the 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security.

Maksym Dotsenko, Director General of the Ukrainian Red Cross, spoke to participants, highlighting:

“Ukraine is already demonstrating its commitment to preventing conflict-related sexual violence by establishing a dedicated legal framework and support systems for survivors. Ukraine is not waiting for the end of the armed conflict but is already putting in place mechanisms for justice and survivor support. The Ukrainian Red Cross is actively supporting collective efforts to strengthen the protection of human life and dignity.”

The Ukrainian Red Cross continues to promote knowledge of international humanitarian law and supports the government in applying IHL standards designed to protect life and dignity during wartime.
