A new stage in the development of psychosocial support and mental health: Ukrainian Red Cross staff and volunteers have been trained as trainers in trauma-informed approaches and referral
The Ukrainian Red Cross, in partnership with the Danish Institute Against Torture and the Danish Red Cross, has trained a group of staff and volunteers as trainers in trauma-informed approaches and referral. Participants included those working in mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) across various regions of Ukraine, who support people in crisis situations on a daily basis.
Over the course of a three-day intensive training, participants deepened their understanding of how trauma impacts individuals and communities, worked through practical case studies, practised referral techniques based on trauma-informed principles, and engaged in role-playing exercises. Special attention was given to the topic of professional burnout, along with strategies for self-care and team well-being as essential components of effective support work.
This training marks an important step in the development of the Ukrainian Red Cross trainer network. It aims to promote trauma-informed practices within communities and among frontline professionals nationwide, contributing to the creation of a safe and supportive environment for individuals affected by traumatic experiences.
