When helping others, it’s important not to forget about yourself. This was the core idea behind a training session on psychological first aid held in Khust for Ukrainian Red Cross teams from six communities in the Zakarpattia region.

The Zakarpattia regional branch of the Ukrainian Red Cross organised the training for volunteers and staff from the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support unit to strengthen their resilience, empathy, and skills in supporting people in crisis.

Representatives from the Irshava, Bilky, Mizhhiria, Khust, Tiachiv, and Velykyi Bychkiv communities took part.

Together, the participants:

  • Studied the principles of psychological first aid — learning how to support others without pressure or judgement;
  • Explored typical emotional reactions in stressful situations;
  • Learned how to prioritise assistance;
  • Practised self-help techniques — because caring for others starts with recognising and attending to your own emotions, breathing, and wellbeing.

This training marks another step towards professional development, team cohesion, and the understanding that caring for others begins with caring for yourself.
