The Ukrainian Red Cross Strengthens Its Mine Action Work: Practical Training in Non-Technical Surveys with the Participation of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine
To improve everyday safety across Ukraine, the Humanitarian Access and Protection Department of the Ukrainian Red Cross is expanding its mine action activities by introducing non-technical surveys (NTS). This initiative aims to reduce risks to human life and health posed by explosive hazards.
From 6 to 15 May 2025, a team of mine risk specialists underwent training in NTS, supported by the Italian Red Cross and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation. The training placed particular emphasis on practical exercises. A key highlight was the involvement of representatives from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, who not only shared their theoretical expertise but also demonstrated the stages of non-technical surveys and the specialised equipment used in the field.
It was an extremely valuable experience for the participants, who practised terrain analysis, community engagement, and the documentation of hazardous objects in the field. This hands-on training format ensures a high standard of instruction and real-world preparedness for work in affected regions.
“Next comes the implementation of non-technical surveys in regions of Ukraine where the level of mine risk remains critical. We are grateful to the representatives of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine for their partnership, expertise, and genuine commitment. Together, we are taking another step towards saving lives,” said Svitlana Avramenko, Head of the Humanitarian Access and Protection Department.
