IHL Training for Students of the State Tax University

On 20 February 2025, Ukrainian Red Cross experts conducted a training session on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) for students at the State Tax University in Irpin. The aim of this outreach event was to raise awareness among future professionals about this important branch of law, which sets the rules for armed conflict and seeks to limit violence during times of war. Approximately 150 students and lecturers from the university took part in the training.

What did students learn at the training on International Humanitarian Law?

Traditionally, the event began with a presentation on the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, where participants learned about the various components of the world’s largest humanitarian movement, its symbols, objectives, and principles. Following this introduction, Ukrainian Red Cross volunteer trainers Yurii Bondarchuk and Maryna Yeshchenko led the training, which consisted of several key modules:

  • Introduction to IHL (history, structure, sources, key concepts, and content)
  • Civilians in IHL (protection of civilians, with practical case studies)
  • Group work on a given topic, followed by final testing

Through the awareness-raising activities of the Ukrainian Red Cross, young people and students are given the opportunity to deepen their understanding of international humanitarian law. This is particularly significant in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine. The knowledge and skills gained during the training will serve as a foundation for further development in this field, as our country urgently needs highly qualified specialists in human rights protection and the restoration of justice for all victims of armed conflict.
