Volunteers from the Ukrainian Red Cross emergency response team took part in joint exercises with first responders from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Kyiv region
With the onset of frost, water bodies in the Kyiv region are covered with ice. Due to unstable temperatures, the ice remains thin and dangerous, which can lead to tragic consequences. For this reason, water safety has become particularly relevant at this time.
To improve the skills and coordination of volunteers and emergency workers in rescuing people who have fallen through the ice, the Kyiv regional emergency response team of the Ukrainian Red Cross and first responders from the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service in the Kyiv region held a joint training session.
The main focus of the rescue services during the exercise was on the following:
- First responders demonstrated the actions to take in critical situations.
- Divers demonstrated self-rescue and evacuation techniques.
- Volunteers from the Ukrainian Red Cross demonstrated how to provide first aid and prevent hypothermia.
According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, since the beginning of the year, nine people have died in the water bodies of the Kyiv region. In the past week alone, two cases of ice collapse occurred on the Irpin River: one person died, and another was rescued.
Do not venture onto the ice during unstable temperatures! Take care of yourself and your loved ones!
