First Aid for People with Disabilities: When Limitations Become Opportunities!
The Ukrainian Red Cross is taking a significant step towards creating an inclusive society. Our international first aid trainer, Nadiia Yamnenko, along with her team, is developing a unique methodology for teaching and adapting first aid techniques for people with disabilities.
The unique aspect of this methodology is that it focuses on adapting first aid skills to the physical capabilities of people with disabilities, including those who have lost limbs due to hostilities. This approach not only enables them to effectively learn how to provide first aid, but also empowers them to teach others.
The methodology is based on the concept of post-traumatic growth. It focuses on the strengths of the individual, highlighting the resources and capacity of the psyche to adapt, cope with adversity, and transform it into potential for change. This is why those who have experienced crisis situations, such as the loss of a limb, are often eager to share their experiences, support others, and become mentors. Currently, the methodology is still under research, and as soon as it is finalised, the development team will provide all the necessary recommendations.
Nowadays, it is already well-established, based on research by the Ukrainian Red Cross, that learning new skills, such as first aid, helps to:
- adapt to new living conditions,
- improve mental well-being,
- strengthen the sense of social significance.
It is not only about helping others but also represents a powerful step towards integration and equality. The development and implementation of this technique will foster a stronger, more inclusive society where everyone can contribute.
The research is conducted with the support of the French Red Cross.
